A Silver Jubilee: VLIS Celebrates 25 Years

On February 15, 2025, the Belgian Consulate in Shanghai hosted a special celebration as VLIS marked its 25th anniversary. The event brought together members of the Flemish community for an enjoyable evening, featuring a walking dinner, drinks, and an afterparty.

Consul General Pascal Buffin opened the evening with heartfelt remarks, celebrating VLIS’s remarkable journey over the past quarter-century and reflecting on the strong, enduring connections between Belgium and China. His speech set a proud tone for the evening, honoring the organization's pivotal role in bringing the Flemish community in Shanghai together.

Chairman Alex De Ceuster followed with a presentation that was both reflective and nostalgic. He shared pictures from key events over the last 25 years, showing how VLIS has evolved while maintaining its core mission. For many in the room, it was a moment to think back about the organization’s earlier days and the remarkable journey that has led to today’s events.

As guests mingled, they enjoyed a gourmet walking dinner prepared by one of our new members and renowned executive chef Piet Vandeputte, whose menu brought together traditional Belgian favorites with modern culinary twists. From savory potato delicacies sponsored by Lutosa to exquisite chocolates from our member Barry Callebaut, each bite was a tribute to the best of Belgian cuisine. Of course, the guests also enjoyed drinks throughout the evening, with Stella Artois, sponsored by our member AB InBev, to complement the occasion.

Dressed in silver to mark the “Silver Jubilee,” guests contributed to the glamour of the evening, reflecting the milestone with stylish attire and accessories. This special event was more than just a commemoration of 25 years—it was a testament to the strength and spirit of the Flemish business community in Shanghai. As attendees looked back on the past with pride, they also looked forward to the next 25 years of growth, collaboration, and success.
