Umicore Shanghai R&D Center Grand Opening

Belgian materials technology group Umicore has taken a significant step in its global innovation strategy with the inauguration of a new research and development center in Shanghai on March 31, 2026. As the company’s first corporate R&D hub outside Europe, this new facility highlights the growing importance of Asia, and China in particular, in the development of clean technologies.
Located in the Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone, the 3,600-square-meter center is dedicated to applied research in advanced materials that support the energy transition. The work carried out on-site will focus notably on the development of catalysts used in hydrogen fuel cells, with the aim of improving their efficiency, durability, and cost-effectiveness. These innovations are essential for the wider adoption of hydrogen as a clean energy source, particularly in transport and industry.
At the same time, the center will contribute to the advancement of battery materials and recycling technologies. Researchers will work on optimizing processes for recovering valuable metals such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel from end-of-life batteries, a key challenge in the transition towards a circular economy. In addition, efforts will be made in the field of catalysis to design materials capable of reducing industrial emissions and improving air quality.
Looking ahead, the scope of research is expected to expand to emerging technologies such as green hydrogen production and carbon capture solutions, further strengthening Umicore’s role in the development of low-carbon technologies.
This investment builds on nearly four decades of activity in China and reflects the company’s intention to deepen its collaboration with local universities, research institutes, and industrial partners. By positioning its research capabilities closer to one of the world’s most dynamic innovation ecosystems, Umicore aims to accelerate the development of sustainable solutions while responding more effectively to regional market needs.
Through this new innovation center, Umicore is reinforcing its commitment to shaping a more sustainable and resource-efficient future, at a time when global demand for clean technologies continues to grow.
