Klaas Gubbels: A Departure from Modern
克拉斯•赫伯斯:从现代主义出发

From May 30 until July 30, AroundSpace Gallery presents an exhibition dedicated to Klaas Gubbels, offering visitors a rare opportunity to explore more than four decades of work from one of the Netherlands’ most distinctive contemporary artists.
Now 92 years old, Gubbels continues to create with remarkable energy and dedication. Best known for his iconic coffee pot and teapot motifs, he has spent a lifetime transforming everyday objects into a unique visual language that is instantly recognizable across the Dutch art world and beyond.

Born in Rotterdam in 1934 and now living in Arnhem, Gubbels built an international reputation through his paintings, sculptures, prints, and installations. Influenced by modern masters such as Paul Cézanne, Henri Matisse, and Pablo Picasso, he developed a visual style that is both minimalist and deeply expressive.
The exhibition showcases works from the 1980s through 2026, highlighting the evolution of Gubbels’ artistic practice. Among the featured pieces is Horizontal (2026), a new acrylic painting that combines humor, simplicity, and reflection through the image of a coffee pot resting horizontally on a table.

Throughout his career, Gubbels has elevated ordinary household objects into symbols of memory, emotion, and human connection. His works can be found in prestigious collections including the Rijksmuseum and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, and have long been admired by collectors and institutions across Europe and North America.
